It seems a new groups of Portals has emerged into the XM layer. I found this document floating around in the intel community that could explain why they are emerging now, they seem to be connected to an organization known as Circle K, which is known publicly as a convenience store chain, but below the surface may in fact be the support network for a global group of archeologists pursuing an ancient Prime Artifact.

Agents, I've also heard rumors that the some Circle K stores may be offering special (and allegedly powerful) codes to those who visit.
