Nik Collection preset of the week: Color Efex Pro 4 - Subtle Film Efex

Subtly escaping the linear look of the digital capture can vastly improve the impact of many photographs. Taking this process too far though can make the photograph more about the technique, and less about the story the story behind the image. While making photographs that are about the technique can be great for the learning process, they often times fall flat and have no residual story. To avoid an image from being too technique driven with post process enhancements, a delicate balance needs to be attained between the original capture of the image and the adjustment of tone and color. This week’s recipe for Color Efex Pro 4, offers a subtle film effect that can take your image in a new direction. It can also be further tweaked to balance the adjustment for different images.

The Subtle Film Efex recipe employs four filters from Color Efex Pro 4. Two of the filters make up the bulk of the adjustment, while the other two support the styling effect. The Sunlight filter applies a soft, warm, glow effect, that also subtly flattens certain tones and textures. Pairing the Bleach Bypass filter with the Sunlight filter can enhance some of the textures that are lost from the Sunlight filter. For the finishing touches, the Film Efex: Vintage filter applies a slight film emulation and grain to add an extra element, while the Vignette: Lens filter darkens the edges to direct the viewer’s eye toward the center of the frame.

Pro Tip: For images with a short depth of field, using control points to fully or partially remove the Bleach Bypass filter from the out of focus areas can help to create more depth and an overall more subtle final image.
