Quickie Guide to Animated Cover Photos from YouTube Videos:
A number of people have been asking how I created a cover photo from last night's YouTube post. As many people have noticed, we allow you to set animated GIFs as the your cover photo as long as the GIF is the correct 16:9 aspect ratio. Thankfully, this is the standard aspect ratio for most cameras and phones, and the preferred format on YouTube. Upload your video to YouTube as a public video as your source and grab its URL.
There are a number YouTube to GIF converters out there, and I used the first one I came across on the web, http://www.yt2gif.com/. The result is very low res, and the site limits you to a 10 second clip. Feel free to suggest a better alternative in the comments. In this case, that's perfect for a quick downloading cover photo. Download this GIF (right-click, save to disk).
You now have a 16:9 GIF you can up for your cover photo. Upload the file in the change photo dialog. You will be given an option to crop the photo, but you'll need to use the entire image. Drag the crop handles all the way into image corners before you save your change.
Voilà!
Granted, the results aren't perfect (still shaky, and the color palette has led to some dithering), but without intermediate cleanup tools and zero effort in post-production, this cover photo is acceptable.
