A New Solar Slate For the New Age

Decades ago when I was in the primary school, I used to squat on the floor with a slate in my hand.  We will sit and write something in every class, erasing and reusing the space for more and more learning. It was a great experience to run home with a big tick mark on the slate after the last session.

We were not worried about mistakes because they could be easily erased. We did not gloat on our achievements as the physical cleaning of the slate left an indelible impact that things were going to change when the slate was cleaned for the next new experience.

Whatever was to be stored had to be stored in the memory chip of our brain and not on an external hard drive. This sharpened our memory and made us focus on just what we could take in.

Today my laptops, additional storage devices and the cupboards which are used to store them are all full. I am exceeding the allotted space on cloud storage and need to delete things or upgrade the service. The whole world is my slate and my teachers but my personal memory chip is growing weaker by the day.

If there was paucity of resources earlier there is an overwhelming downpour of resources now. If I do not die of starvation or dehydration I may die of drowning.

Can't I have the best of the both? Can't there be a link which combines both and provides me with a rich learning experience.

For the poor children of our country I dream of a slate, a slate that can be left outside the hut to be charged by the sun, a slate that helps them write, erase and rewrite as well as access resources online. I dream of some way of downloading the materials from the clouds directly to the state without depending on the poor internet connections.

The slate should be sturdy enough for rough use with a touch screen that can be operated with a slate pencil. Each child should get this slate for free and Government should save money on books and benches to cover up this cost. Even in places where there is one teacher taking care of multiple classes the system will work with each child working on materials suited to their levels.

I have been using tablet PCs in the school where I work. I do not think it will be accessible to all the poor children unless it is available with a solar charging facility integrated in it. Our country does not have good internet connection available even in metros. Are there ways of producing connectivity through solar power?

Can we create a simple one room structure with an attached toilet in each village with a solar roof that provides space for an open courtyard where the tablets can be left (not plugged) to get charged. Just in case a few children forget to charge the tablet they may sit in the sun and work.

I am a dreamer and my dreams will continue till I wake up...

  1. Absolutely Ranganayaki Srinivas Ma'am. It is a great dream which is going to be True. Children wouldn't have heavy school bags but they'll have eSlates which can be charged through the Sun. Their attendance will be taken care by eMusters. I heard, Japan has invented Solar Cars. In India, we have plenty of Silica but Silicon is rare, which is a basic substance to create solar panels. That's why perhaps the panels are very expensive. The cell manufacturing companies will lose a great deal of  profit as they're making big business with the sale of cellular batteries and chargers. We are blessed to have the Sunny days in India. But I wonder, why there's no innovations made in the field of Solar Science in mobile phone technology!

  6. Thanks Bruce Rick The video shows an islate powered by battery. Using this information I searched further and found one which is solar charged. http://tech2.in.com/news/tablets/introducing-the-islate-a-solar-powered-tablet-for-the-children-of-india/154932

If these islates are not limited to one type of content and can take any android apps they would be great. If they can be connected to the clouds bypassing the almost non-existant internet connection, it will be a dream come true.
