Can't +1 this enough.

Can't +1 this enough. Probably 5% of the time I use my phone is used for voice calls and even that is way too much. The only calls I pick up are from family and work. My real friends know I hate phone calls and don't ever call me unless it's an emergency.

Not only are text messages (G+ posts, messenger, sms, chat, emails) less intrusive, they don't disturb the others around you. I don't need to drop everything and walk around trying to find a quiet spot just to hear what you want. So the next time you need something from me... text, don't call.

Thoughts on Phone Calls

An anti-phone-call sentiment has been spreading around G+ lately. I agree with all of it.

When I get a phone call, I think to myself as I'm answering it "Somebody better be on fire". If it's not an emergency/time-sensitive, then you are imposing. Always.

Some thoughts:

You can write me an instant message. I will get to it when it's convenient for me. You should never assume I am sitting at the edge of my seat waiting for a message from you, and can respond immediately/have a conversation. I'm always doing something, and nobody but me gets to decide how my day is spent. If I'm literally doing nothing, it's only because I've chosen to do nothing, and therefore want to continue doing nothing.

If you write me an instant message that tells me to call you, you should mention the subject, or at least the importance. If you do not, I will think someone has died or is severely injured, as these are generally the only cases where live conversation is the only appropriate way to deliver that sort of message.

If you call and leave a voicemail that tells me to call you without mentioning the subject, or minimally the importance, then I will assume someone has died or is severely injured. If you leave these kinds of voicemails, and nobody is dead or severely injured, then we probably shouldn't be friends.
