Tony Wagner of Harvard's Technology & Entrepreneurship Center came to Google today for a discussion on transforming education for the 21st century. Here are my notes.
In a nutshell:
- Our education system is obsolete: it focuses on information (now a commodity), not innovation
- Many HS and college graduates are under/unemployed because they don't have the right skills
- The right skills are not part of current assessments, and thus not being effectively taught:
- Creative problem solving
- Collaboration
- Adaptability
- Initiative
- Communication
- Accessing & using information
- Curiosity & imagination
- Those who are inspiring students to become innovators are doing the following:
- Accountable teamwork and collaboration
- Problem-based learning across multiple disciplines
- Learning how to make mistakes, reflect on them, learn from them, and iterate
- Active education, not simply passive lecturing
- Focus on intrinsic motivation, rather than carrots & sticks; play → passion → purpose
