...you can help protect your account by making sure you’re using a strong, unique password for your Google Account, upgrading your account to use 2-step verification, and updating the recovery options on your account such as your secondary email address and your phone number.

In 2010, our security team started seeing a trend of spammers hijacking legitimate accounts to send their messages (since if a message comes from someone you know, it's more likely to make it through spam filters). To help protect your account against this kind of attack, our team came up with a system that uses 120+ signals to try and detect whether a log-in is legitimate, beyond just a password. The result is that we've reduced the number of compromised accounts by 99.7 percent since the peak of these hijacking attempts in 2011.
